7. Impersonal Love for the Human Race (Agape)
A. Definition: Impersonal love for the human race is an objective and relaxed mental attitude that provides capacity for unconditional love in friendship, romance, marriage and all other human interaction.
B. Documentation: (John 15:27; Romans 13:9; Galatians 5:14)
- John 15:17 - These things I command you, that ye love one another. (KJV)
- Romans 13:9 - For this, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (KJV)
- Galatians 5:14 - For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; thou shall love thy neighbor thyself. (KJV)
C. Problem solved: Impersonal love for the human race solves the advancing believer's problem of any sinful mental attitude that is generated by yielding to the old-sin-nature in a difficult or strained or impossible relationship.
D. How does impersonal love for the human race solve the mental attitude problems associated with a difficult or strained or impossible relationship?
The application of impersonal love enables the believer to relax mentally toward any person instead of reacting with such mental attitude sins as worry, envy, greed, anger, arrogance, implacability, vindictiveness, self-pity, guilt feelings, hatred, bitterness, jealousy.
